A retired tea planter Mr. L. W. Fernando started this business in 1978 and was under the name Ratnapura Transport Service. Today that company has involved in many business interests which now constitutes a group of companies headed by its present Chairman Lalith Liyanage. The associate companies of the group are Hidellana Tea Factory, R. T. S Tea Nursery, R. T. S Heavy Equipment, R. T. S Engineering, R. T. S Metal Crusher, Bopath Falls Rock Chalets, Avissawella Tea Factory, R.T.S Petroleum and Lake Serenity Boutique Hotel. R.T.S Engineering Pvt Ltd has developed and introduced a withering fan with a three horse power motor. This model of fan has now been certified by the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka. R.T.S. Engineering has also introduced a firewood splitting machinery which can be used in the tea industry.
R. T. S. Holdings enhances the livelihood of the people who work for the group and who have helped with the growth of the company and who have established good will both locally and internationally. R.T.S has also been active in building 200 homes for those in the Hambantota district following the Tsunami and has assisted a large number of people who were in distress during the natural disasters that affected the people living in the Ratnapura district also. R.T.S Group is diverse and has ventured into the fields of not only tea but also construction, engineering, Hospitality, leisure and trading. The Hidellana and Avissawella Tea Factories both follow the 5S system of productivity management. Avissawella Tea factory has gained its remarkable achievement on the excellent performance at the highest level in the country. RTS group has been awarded with many prestigious awards locally and internationally.
During the last three decades the business has grown up and today the RTS group of companies is a well known name among business and general community in Sri Lanka.
